Take A Look At The New Bulova CURV Mens Watch

That’s the question that comes to mind on the first glance at the Bulova CURV collection of twelve different models, each with an unusual curved movement inside.

It’s true, quartz watch movements rarely get a look-in over  at QP Towers: a battery can’t compete with the engineering and craftsmanship that goes into a mechanical watch. However, Bulova’s CURV is worth a closer look, featuring what the brand claims is the world’s first curved chronograph movement.

Bulova Mens Watch has been producing high quality quartz watches for decades now, developing on the success of its electronic Accutron movement in the early 1960s. More recently, it launched a new edition of the Accutron Spaceview, albeit featuring Precisionist rather than Accutron movements.

Now we have the CURV, with prices set from £449 to £699. There are a few different versions, including a sleekly industrial swiss mens watch with a black dial (above) at the higher end of the price spectrum, and some tonneau-shaped cases in mixed metallics.

Inside is a 262kHz quartz unit, accurate to about +/- 10 seconds per year, which arches up so the whole thing fits smoothly over the wrist. It’s somewhat reminiscent of those souvenir pennies that have been elongated through a press; it’s not finely finished in any way but does have a subtle vertical brushing. There’s something pleasingly retro about the look, with the exposed copper coils and unfussy brass plate.

The movement is visible through the sapphire glass caseback, but only on a couple of the models in the CURV range. Frankly, it’s the whole point, and we’d want the open back over a closed one any day. Sure, you wouldn’t normally spend long looking at a quartz movement but if the key feature of your watch is a unique piece of movement engineering, you need to let people see it. When you do, a nice touch is that Bulova has also returned to the tuning fork logo, which was the key feature of the Accutron, seen here on the battery.
